Nintendo Company was founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi on September 23 1889 . The company’s first product was handmade playing cards called Hanafuda , sales went well and the company was hiring more employees to meet demand. Fusajiro Yamauchi gave the company to Sekiryo Yamauchi years in 1929 .
The company has not always done well financially, but have always tried to find activities for their employees so that they do not have to be without income. Such an opportunity arose in the 1950s, which led to a number of employees during a transitional period earned their living by driving taxis .
In the late 1960s, established itself on the Nintendo toy market. Among the products they made were a series of light guns , a technique they later used to create a gaming machine simulated clay pigeon shooting . During the 1970s, Nintendo invested more and more on the growing arcade market and in 1981 they got their first hit. A young Shigeru Miyamoto got his first chance to make a game and the result was Donkey Kong . The year before it was released handheld game Ball , the first in the series, Game & Watch . Game & Watch was a great success and around 60 different games came to be released. Perhaps it was this that convinced Nintendo that their future was in the home products rather than arcade.
1991 introduced the company’s shares on the Japanese stock market. Shares goes under the name ticker NTDOY [1] . Nintendo estimated that the value of the own shares represents approximately 30 dollars and they let their employees get priority access to them. The idea was that they were supposed to rise in value and that they would give employees who snapped up the offer with a profit. Unfortunately, denver injury attorney the step is not the value of the shares but fell instead and have low times stabilized at a level that is considerably lower than the purchase price. The value of the company’s shares are currently on par or even above the original level, thanks largely to sales success of the two consoles Nintendo DS and Wii .
As a result of sharply higher sales of consoles and games made by Nintendo, the value of the company’s shares outperformed the value of competitor Sony (who created the Playstation ), but it has not gone on the other competitor Microsoft (which manufactures the Xbox ).

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
Main article: NES
On July 15th 1983 was launched Famicom , a launch that seemed entirely stillborn. The year before, the game industry literally collapsed, the future seemed to belong to home computers and it was Nintendo had to recall the 500 000 first units because the hardware was hopelessly buggy. Against all odds, it became instead a success and the company released it even in the USA and Canada in 1985 – in 1986 and in Europe and Australasia 1,986 – one thousand nine hundred and eighty-seven , but outside Japan , it has always been called the Nintendo Entertainment System ( NES ), or Nintendo 8-bit as the known locally. Since there was no real competition was on an enormous advantage against recent consoles such as SEGA Mark III (called the Master System in an updated version). Overall, the console sold 64 million copies.
Of the three consoles that sold more than NES , two autographed Sony .
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
Main article: Super NES
1987 released the NEC console, PC Engine and the 1988 released SEGA the Megadrive in Japan. At first, none of them much attention, but the more modern technology talking to himself, which meant that Nintendo began to lose market share. The sequel to the Famicom , the Japanese reached the shops in 1990 and the name was the Super Famicom . Success was not long in coming. More difficult was it in the U.S. and in Europe where the SEGA Mega Drive (known as Genesis in the U.S.) met with greater success than in Japan. The console was not surprisingly named the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (or SNES ) in the West. The performance of the hardware was slightly better than Mega Drivens but marginally severe enough that the difference was due more to the games they compared. Everything was set for the first great console war . In the end, sold the SNES: a better and had more games but it was not about total domination.
CD-ROM : one breakthrough was not limited to the home computer market, many players in the video game market was trying to hang on through the development of CD-ROM expansions to their consoles. As early as 1989 released the NEC such an expansion to the PC Engine and 1991 was Sega ‘s Mega CD . Nintendo did not of course be worse and even before their SNES was on the market began a partnership with Sony to provide it with CD-ROM. The cooperation was discontinued in 1991 because SONY began acting more and more independent, and instead turned to Nintendo for Philips to create a CD-ROM expansion that would be compatible with their CD-i . Since Sony already had provided SNES: one with a sound chip was Nintendo, however, depends on the Sony and a third co-started, then with both Sony and Philips. However, Nintendo got cold feet and withdrew after the Sega flopped with a CD-ROM expansion to one of their consoles. Any finished product was then never. The result instead was that Sony went on their own to develop their own console with the same name they used during the collaboration with Nintendo, PlayStation . This custom console was released in 1994 and went on to further weaken Nintendo’s market position.

During the 1980s, Bins the U.S. third-party developers to set up in extremely harsh conditions made possible by Nintendo’s total market dominance. Among other things, they promise that they produced the games would be Nintendo exclusive for two years. This led to several legal disputes and finally, in the early 1990s interfered U.S. Congress and the FTC into the conflict. 1991 a settlement was reached which required Nintendo to provide a voucher of $ 5 when buying a new game for all U.S. Consumers who bought a Nintendo game between June 1988 and December 1990 . Nintendo’s market dominance was thus helped along by the U.S. government.

It was the period 1991 – one thousand nine hundred ninety-eight examined and the largest difference in price occurred in 1996 when the products could be as much as 65% more expensive in the Netherlands and Spain than in Britain . It is in the early 1970s that Nintendo is turning to the emerging market of video games. In addition to creating games for arcade games , Nintendo is working with Magnavox to the creation of the Odyssey , the first multi-home console games in history ( 1972 ).
The first console created by Nintendo was released in 1977 only in Japan . These consoles had no additional game cartridges and had a separate set in several versions depending on their difficulty (from 6 to 112 depending on the consoles versions). In 1980 , Nintendo released the Game & Watch created by Gunpei Yokoi . These games, which fit in your pocket, enjoyed great success around the world: in 2008, some versions of G & W reach highly sought price of around 500 euros . 1983-1989: The early success
In 1983 , Nintendo released the console Famicom ( Family Computer ) in Japan, and in 1985 the United States ( 1986 in Europe and Canada) as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
In the early 1980s, personal computing and explodes the console market is collapsing for the first time in its short history. Indeed, at the time, the computers do not cost more than the consoles while offering more services. Only the paintball Famicom, thanks to its competitive price, managed to succeed at the game And when Coleco went bankrupt, as Mattel and MB deviate from the market and that Atari and Philips are recycled into the computer , Nintendo thus find no competitor. Despite the release, in 1986 , the Console Master System for Sega , Nintendo reigns uncontested on the console market. Indeed, at that time, Japan and the United States, one in three households was equipped with a Famicom. It is through the quality and number of games released as the Famicom necessary, as the tactics imposed by Hiroshi Yamauchi . In 1985 , the famous Super Mario Bros. be for sale and will be the second best selling game in the world (behind Wii Sports by Nintendo, the console comes with Wii ) with 40.24 million copies.
In 1986 , Nintendo will launch in the Japanese market a revolutionary device for downloading games, Famicom Disk System .

In the late 1980s, the Japanese company Nintendo is the most profitable, to Toyota , and nearly one in two households in Japan has a Famicom. At that time Nintendo controls about 90% of the market for home consoles.
1989-1995: The climax of the company
The Game Boy from its original version to its Micro
Yet through the genius of Gunpei Yokoi , Nintendo drove the point in coming out in 1989 the Game Boy . The output Denver Divorce Lawyer of the small handheld console from Nintendo is accompanied by the famous Tetris , which Nintendo secured the rights after a fierce fight against Atari and Microsoft and is a smash hit 10 . This console has combined low price, long battery life and a catalog of games as rich and varied. It is a marriage which was unable to Lynx from Atari and NEC PC Engine GT, yet much more powerful, but far too expensive. Only the Game Gear from Sega could seriously challenge the Game Boy, but his low self he lost the fight. At that time, all competitors of the Game Boy were colored, but she only had a monochrome screen.
Super Nintendo
Next home console, it’s NEC with its PC-Engine ( TurboGrafx-16 United States) and especially with its Sega Genesis ( Megadrive in Europe ), which will break the supremacy of Nintendo. Nintendo replica in 1990 leaving the Super Famicom (SNES in the U.S., Super Nintendo in Europe). And despite a somewhat difficult start to the youngest of Nintendo, the company is still huge profits from sales of consoles Famicom and Game Boy. Super Mario Bros.. 3 (released in 1991 on the NES) is a steamroller which sold 15 million copies. A draft CD-ROM, in collaboration with Sony for the Super Nintendo was announced, his name: Super Nintendo Play Station.
It was only from 1992 (when it was released in Europe) and thanks to its slight technical superiority vs. its competitors (especially the 7 Mode , which allows to create games in pseudo 3D , like F-Zero or Super Mario Kart , and the number of colors displayed on screen), the console came to dominate.
In 1993, Nintendo released a redesigned version of the AV Famicom Famicom called (2 NES in the U.S.) is out next year as the latest Famicom cartridges, a lifetime of 11 years, unheard of for a home console.
Also in 1993, Nintendo cancels the partnership of CD-ROM with Sony, it would appear that Sony has tried to recapture the technology Nintendo for their own use (what happens elsewhere with their machine, they would call for According to the project name: PlayStation ) to join forces with Philips , this alliance will be born only 4 games Nintendo poor quality of the machine CD-I Philips. Nintendo also announced the development of a new console: the Project Reality .
Subsequently, the catalog of the Super Nintendo will continue to expand with classic games like Super Mario World , The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past , Super Metroid , Street Fighter II , the trilogy Donkey Kong Country (where the characters are 3D models digitalized revolution for its time), Super Mario Kart and the series of role-playing Final Fantasy , Seiken Densetsu and Dragon Quest . Explores the same console with 3D graphics chip Super FX used in the legendary Star Fox ( Starwing in Europe). At that time, Nintendo still control 75% of the market for video game consoles . Also in 1995 , and to boost sales face competition from increasingly aggressive, Nintendo will launch a new device (only in Japan ) which, through a satellite adapter, to download games on the console: the Satellaview . 1995 was also the year that Nintendo will enter the capital of Rareware company behind the development of Donkey Kong Country .
1995-2001: An era of contrasts
Virtual Boy in front view.
During the summer of 1995 , Nintendo released on the American and Japanese console 32 -bit experimental: the Virtual Boy . This mid-portable console, half salon designed by Gunpei Yokoi was presented in the form of a headset incorporating the concept of virtual reality. It was a failure, just 700,000 units were sold, forcing Nintendo to cancel the European launch. Contrary to what is often argued Gunpei Yokoi did not leave the company because of the failure of the Virtual Boy, but simply to create toys that had always been his true passion.
The Project Reality (or Ultra 64) was finally released in 1996 in Japan and the United States and 1997 in Europe. Renamed Nintendo 64 , this ultra-powerful console when it was announced in 1993 in partnership with Silicon Graphics was not as revolutionary in 1996 , after two years late. Without being a commercial failure, it does not know the expected success, and the market sees dominated by Sony and its PlayStation . Loss of market share does not prevent the Nintendo 64 a series of successes with many games sold millions of copies. Nintendo, the leading publisher of its own console, and realize windfall profits. Super Mario 64 , released simultaneously with the console, is revolutionizing the world of 3D gaming with its superb maneuverability and the analog stick
Nintendo 64
Also in 1996, Nintendo will separate Square , who had brought him tremendous support with many RPG . A dispute over the cartridge holder of the N64 (as being too limited Square face CD-ROM) will result in the Square will no longer develop games for Nintendo, but exclusively on PlayStation, thus losing market share for many Nintendo the benefit of Sony.
It’s a harmless little game called Pocket Monster (Pokemon), released on Game Boy in 1995 , which will boost the firm. Indeed, against all odds, this game has been successful worldwide and is leading the best-selling games ( two e best selling to date), at the same time boosting sales of Game Boy, and making the mobile Nintendo the best selling console in history.
It was also in 1996 that Nintendo will bring to market the Game Boy Pocket , redesigned version, smaller, lighter the Game Boy original with sales declining.
In October 1997 , a tragic event overturns Nintendo and its fans: Gunpei Yokoi’s death in a road accident.
Subsequently, hits like Mario Kart 64 , Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye , F-Zero X will be linked together and take off the sales of the Nintendo 64 (but not equal those of the PlayStation).
In 1998 , the Super Nintendo had sold over 49 million copies and a revamped version released in Japan and the United States: the Super Nes Jr. In March 1998 , Nintendo released in Japan, the Game Boy Light , backlit version of the Game Boy Pocket. However, the launch of the Game Boy Light is not a success, because the fans would rather wait until the end of the year and discover a real new handheld: the Game Boy Color . With a color screen and a processor twice as fast as the old Game Boy, it is a success.
At the E3 1999 , Nintendo announced its new console: the Dolphin (the code name for the GameCube).
In 2000 , Rareware released the following unofficial Goldeneye : Perfect Dark surpasses its predecessor and Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask , which despite its quality, but especially its originality can not be sold at 3.3 million copies.
2001-2004: Nintendo stalled
Game Boy Advance
In 2001 , the pace of releases on Nintendo 64 is slowing down: the end is near. Nevertheless, it was during this year that Rareware released the game as offensive from the console: Conker’s Bad Fur Day is now a collector’s item [ref. required] . Nintendo released in the last quarter of 2001, his last great game: Paper Mario after Super Mario RPG on Super Nintendo .
In June 2001 , Nintendo released the successor to the Game Boy (age 13, although having experienced three changes, the Game Boy Pocket in 1996 , the Game Boy Light and Game Boy Color in 1998 ), the Game Boy Advance . This handheld, more powerful than the Super Nintendo , created a craze among both players than among developers.
Nintendo GameCube
Late 2001 , Nintendo released in Japan and the United States the GameCube (formerly named Dolphin), created to compete with the Dreamcast from Sega , the PlayStation 2 from Sony and the Xbox from Microsoft , the new 128-bit console, Nintendo has many assets. This is the first Nintendo console to abandon the cartridges for a storage format on mini-DVD. In addition to his great power, the GameCube arrives with a catalog combines the classic brand, like Metroid Prime , Super Smash Bros.. Melee , Mario Kart: Double Dash! who was one of the greatest success on the GameCube, and innovative titles such as Pikmin or Animal Crossing . Nintendo has also signed an exclusive agreement, subsequently lost, with Capcom for its series Resident Evil .
